Unit Conversion Tool

One converter for the units that come up in fermentation recipes: grams, ounces, liters, cups, teaspoons, °C and °F.

Volume uses US customary measures: 1 cup = 236.6 ml, 1 tbsp = 14.8 ml, 1 tsp = 4.93 ml. Metric cups are 250 ml and imperial pints differ - when a recipe matters, weigh instead.

Notes on the conversions

Weight and temperature conversions are exact. Volume uses US customary definitions (1 cup = 236.6 ml, 1 tbsp = 14.8 ml, 1 tsp = 4.93 ml); metric cups (250 ml) and imperial pints differ. When a recipe matters, prefer weight over volume.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in an ounce?

One ounce is 28.35 g (exactly 28.3495 g). The calculator converts both directions, and also handles kilograms, pounds and all the common kitchen volume units.

How many ml are in a cup?

A US customary cup is 236.6 ml - the definition used here. Metric cups (250 ml, common in Australia, Canada and elsewhere) and the old imperial cup (284 ml) are different, so check which one a recipe means before converting.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9/5 and add 32. So 24 °C is 75.2 °F, and fridge temperature (4 °C) is 39.2 °F. The tool converts temperature both ways, including negative values for freezers and cold rooms.

Why prefer weight over volume in fermentation recipes?

Volume measures vary with how you fill the spoon and with the density of the ingredient; weight does not. Fermentation outcomes are sensitive to salt and sugar concentration, so weighing removes the biggest single source of error.
